In the heart of Virginia, the Bedford Otter Bus, a community-driven public transit service, is making waves. Mayor C.G. Stanley has been an avid supporter of the service, often noting its positive impact on the town.

The Bedford Otter Bus, operated by Ride Source, a Vinton-based transportation company, under the guidance of the Bedford Community Health Foundation, has been a daily sight for residents and visitors alike. The service has been a great addition to the town, according to the Mayor, who regularly observes its use.

Last year, the Bedford Otter Bus provided a significant boost to the community by offering free rides to passengers. This initiative, along with its daily operations, resulted in 3,234 stops at 17 locations in 2022. The following year saw an increase in usage, with the service making 5,560 stops at the same number of locations.

The service's success is not only appreciated by the Mayor but also by local councilors. Councilor David Foster expresses gratitude for the grant that covers the majority of the operational costs, ensuring town taxpayers are not burdened. The grant, amounting to approximately $155,200, is provided by the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation.

The grant, which covers 80% of the full project cost, also requires a 20% match from the Bedford Community Health Foundation, amounting to $38,792. Councilor Stacey Hailey approves of the service's performance and the collaborative efforts that make it possible.

As the service moves forward, the exact details for the 2024 grant, including operational costs, ridership, and any plans for extension, are yet to be determined. To gather more information, it is recommended to reach out to local transportation authorities, check official websites for announcements, or contact local news outlets who might have covered the service in the past.

With the continued support of the community and the grant, the Bedford Otter Bus looks forward to serving the town and contributing to its growth in the future.
