Building in Oldbury honored as the most esteemed of the year in construction

The Oldbury site, developed by science company Syensqo, has made a significant stride towards a greener future by winning its first external award for its biodiversity work. The accolade was bestowed at the UK National Sustainability Awards, held on 2nd October at the London Marriott Hotel, Grosvenor Square.

The Oldbury site's victory is a testament to Syensqo's dedication to advancing sustainability and its "One Planet" program, an environmental and conservation initiative designed to promote sustainable land management practices that protect and enhance biodiversity.

The One Planet program at the Oldbury site directly contributes to the COP15 "30 by 30" target, which aims to protect at least 30% of the planet’s land and sea areas by 2030 to conserve biodiversity and support climate mitigation efforts. The program implements habitat restoration, invasive species control, and biodiversity monitoring on the Oldbury land, thereby increasing the protected and ecologically-managed area within that region.

By aligning their on-the-ground conservation activities with the global 30 by 30 goal, Syensqo helps to ensure that the Oldbury site becomes part of the network of protected areas contributing to the international target, helping to safeguard ecosystems while promoting sustainable interaction with the land.

The Oldbury site, with its 170 years of industrial history, has surpassed sustainability goals and is now attracting various wildlife species such as wagtails, goldfinches, bees, and butterflies. Ian Fryer, Oldbury Site Manager, considers the recognition a proud moment for the entire team, marking a significant step towards a greener future.

In other news, the UK Infrastructure Bank has been rebranded as the National Wealth Fund, signifying a broader focus on economic growth and sustainability. The Oldbury site's ongoing efforts, aligned with Syensqo's vision of advancing humanity through sustainable innovation, are a shining example of the potential for such initiatives to drive positive change.

The One Planet program's success at the Oldbury site demonstrates Syensqo's commitment to both sustainable innovation and environmental-science, making it a potential model for other industries seeking environmental restoration and sustainability practices. The National Wealth Fund, formerly the UK Infrastructure Bank's rebranding, highlights a shifting focus towards sustainable finance that supports projects like the Oldbury site, fostering growth while promoting climate-change mitigation and sustainability. This transformation not only bodes well for the environment but also signals a more sustainable economic future.
