British Military Helps Tame Cyprus' Worst Wildfire in Years
The Mediterranean is grappling with a severe climate crisis, as intense heat and prolonged drought fuel wildfire risks. In southern Cyprus, a massive blaze consumed over 120 square kilometres of forest and threatened 15 villages. Tragically, two lives were lost. Swiftly, the British military, stationed on the island, stepped in to help, underscoring their enduring presence and close cooperation with Cypriot authorities.
The inferno, one of the worst in recent years, was brought under control in less than two days with the combined efforts of British military personnel and local firefighters. RAF Chinook helicopters carried out aerial water-drops, while ground crews provided support with earth-moving equipment and medical aid. The British forces, based at the sovereign areas, were instantly deployed to protect both civilian communities and Defence structures from the advancing flames. Their intervention was part of a well-established emergency cooperation framework with Cyprus.
The British military's swift response and assistance in combating the forest fire is a testament to their commitment to supporting Cyprus in times of crisis. Despite the tragic loss of life, the joint efforts of British personnel and Cypriot emergency services successfully contained the blaze, preventing further devastation.
