Bridge Traffic Congestion: Temporary Closure of Nibelungen Bridge Side Near New Town Hall
The city of Linz in Austria has announced the cancellation of the upstream bike path on the Nibelungen Bridge, following a joint decision made by Infrastructure Provincial Councilor Günther Steinkellner and Linz Vice Mayor Martin Hajart.
The decision was not made lightly, as it came after consultation with the police and other relevant parties. The dismantling of the upstream bike path is expected to be completed in approximately two weeks, given the necessary ordinance procedure.
Linz Vice Mayor Martin Hajart stated that the restrictions for public transport and safety concerns are too great. He added that they have tried everything to make the bike path project work, but if safety concerns persist, they must find a better solution.
The cancellation of the upstream bike path was made unanimously, and Linz Lines has made a statement regarding the decision. Linz Lines has documented 97 critical situations between trams and vehicles on the Nibelungen Bridge since the bike path project started, which highlights the safety concerns.
The municipal mobility provider, Linz Lines, has also stated that if the project doesn't hold up in practice in terms of safety, the pilot project must be stopped. The performance of the bike path, particularly for morning rush hour traffic, was not sufficient on the upper river side of the Nibelungen Bridge.
Despite the cancellation of the upstream bike path, the bike path pilot project on the downstream side of the Nibelungen Bridge remains in place. However, there are no publicly available updates on planned traffic management changes or alternatives being considered following the safety concerns and poor performance during morning rush hour of the bike path pilot project on the upstream side of the Nibelungen Bridge.
For authoritative and up-to-date information on traffic or infrastructure measures, checking official announcements from the City of Linz or the relevant local transport authorities would be necessary. The measures taken for the bike path project would make tram traffic more difficult, according to Linz Lines.
The bike path solution on the Nibelungen Bridge is not feasible for the future, according to Günther Steinkellner. He stated that safety concerns are still a significant factor in the bike path project. The decision to dismantle the upstream bike path was made after a thorough consultation process, ensuring a safe and efficient solution for all users of the Nibelungen Bridge.
