Bridge Closure Alert: Salaca Bridge to Shut Down on Tuesday
The Annasmuiža bridge, located between Riga and the Ainaži side, is set for a significant transformation as work begins on its replacement. The permanent bridge, which has been in a state of disrepair and struggling to handle heavy traffic volumes, will be completely demolished and replaced with a breaking news four-span reinforced concrete beam bridge.
On the Ainaži side, the underbridge sidewalk will be connected to the existing sidewalk structure along the Salaca River. Meanwhile, on the Riga side, a new sidewalk will be created locally, and new stairs will be built at its end. A pedestrian sidewalk is also planned to be built in the underbridge section at both ends of the new bridge.
The closure of the bridge will lead to a re-routing of traffic towards Estonia. The route will consist of the regional road Limbaži-Salacgrīva (P12), local road Salacgrīva-Vecsalaca (V144), Annasmuiža bridge (V144), Vecsalaca-Mērnieki (V145), and Ainaži-Matīši (P15). For light transport traffic towards Riga and public transport traffic in both directions, a specific route will be through Salacgrīva, along Baznīcas Street (V144), Annasmuiža Bridge, and road P12.
Traffic over the Annasmuiža bridge will be organized with traffic lights, and for trucks, alternative routes in the area will be provided. The temporary bridge repair works have led to an alternative route for freight transport along state regional roads Kocēni-Limbaži-Tūja (P11), Limbaži-Aloja (P13), and Ainaži-Matīši (P15).
The local municipal government and the regional transportation authority are responsible for the emergency repair of the bridge section over the Salaca River and the related traffic diversion. The decision to close the temporary bridge is due to cracks appearing in the temporary bridge deck slabs.
Construction work is expected to be completed in the fall of 2025, marking the end of this significant project. The Annasmuiža bridge, with its certain size restrictions, will undergo a significant upgrade, ensuring safer and more efficient transportation for years to come.
