BRICS Expansion: Vietnam to Present Development Goals at Enlarged Meeting: Officially

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh embarked on a historic visit to Brazil from July 4 to 8, marking a significant milestone in Vietnam's international engagement. This trip, which included the expanded BRICS summit and bilateral activities, aimed to strengthen multilateralism, enhance economic and financial cooperation, and promote innovations such as artificial intelligence (AI) to drive inclusive and sustainable development.

During the expanded BRICS summit held in Rio de Janeiro, Prime Minister Chinh presented three key proposals, emphasising renewed international commitment to cooperation, connectivity, and addressing common global challenges. These proposals reflected Vietnam's readiness to contribute actively to multilateral mechanisms.

The summit focused on themes like reinforcing multilateralism amid global complexities, accelerating fair and inclusive reforms in the World Trade Organization (WTO), promoting free trade, and encouraging private sector involvement in AI development. The principle of “AI for all” was endorsed as crucial for national sustainable development strategies, aligning with Vietnam’s approach.

Beyond the summit itself, Prime Minister Chinh engaged in bilateral working sessions with leading Brazilian business leaders, fostering deeper economic and trade ties between Vietnam and Brazil. The goal was to boost cooperation and investment, setting a foundation for sustainable development and shared prosperity in line with global and regional trends.

The visit is expected to serve as an important diplomatic bridge to further strengthen the growing friendship and cooperation between Vietnam and Brazil. This trip is also seen as a step towards effectively advancing the shared goal of diversifying markets, products, and supply chains amid the complexities of global trade.

BRICS member states and invited countries at the summit are comprehensive strategic partners, key partners, and traditional friends of Vietnam. Vietnam's engagement as a BRICS partner and its presence at the summit reflect the Southeast Asian nation's responsible role and contributions to multilateral mechanisms.

The visit provides an opportunity for Vietnamese and Brazilian leaders to discuss major orientations to foster cooperation in trade, investment, and agriculture. These areas are regarded as important pillars of the action plan for implementing the Vietnam-Brazil strategic partnership in the next five years.

The success of PM Chinh's working trip to Brazil to attend the G20 Summit in November 2024 and Brazilian President Lula da Silva's state visit to Vietnam in March 2025 have contributed to maintaining and strengthening bilateral dialogues. Vietnam is expected to express its desire to deepen ties with Brazil and diversify economic, trade, and investment partnerships with high-potential regions.

In conclusion, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh's visit to Brazil has marked a significant step forward in Vietnam's international engagement, strengthening its role in global governance through BRICS, supporting multilateral cooperation in trade and technology, and strengthening bilateral economic partnerships with Brazil. This visit sets a foundation for sustainable development and shared prosperity in line with global and regional trends.

In the expanded BRICS summit, Prime Minister Chinh proposed emphasizing cooperation, connectivity, and addressing common global challenges, showing Vietnam's readiness to contribute to multilateral mechanisms. These proposals align with the focus on reinforcing multilateralism amid global complexities, promoting free trade, and encouraging private sector involvement in AI development.
