Tilapia Harvest in Việt Nam, Green Light From Brazil

Buenos Aires' buzzing! The Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA) has given the go-ahead to import tilapia fish from Việt Nam. After a brief review that started in February 2024 due to concerns about the Tilapia tilapinevirus (TiLV) infection, the MAPA decided that the risk is negligible.

The suspension was initially in place as MAPA needed time to review the risk associated with the imports. From November 2023 to February 2024, Brazil issued 22 import licenses for tilapia fillets from Việt Nam while rejecting just two others. Now, the Brazilian Gazette has officially published the MAPA's decision to lift the suspension.

Brazil's move to allow tilapia imports from Việt Nam is not just a one-off decision. It's part of global trade negotiations that also involve opening the beef market in Việt Nam. The MAPA has assured that this decision to import tilapia from Việt Nam will not compromise Brazil's high national health standards.

The Import Risk Analysis (ARI) played a crucial role in MAPA's decision. Conducted after warnings from the domestic fisheries industry in 2024, the ARI determined that the risk of tilapia fillet imports from Việt Nam is minimal. MAPA's decision to lift the suspension is supported by these findings.

To maintain these high standards, rigorous checks will be conducted on imported tilapia, and the products must comply with all relevant Brazilian regulations and international standards. These regulations are based on technical principles and are in line with the guidelines of the Aquatic Animal Health Code of the World Organisation for Animal Health.

The Việt Nam Trade Office in Brazil confirmed that the next phase of negotiations will focus on finalizing technical steps to allow the import of all types of pangasius fish fillet products meeting internationally recognized standards and practices. In return, Việt Nam will open its doors to Brazilian beef products.
