Bise Mayor Vows Action Against BPO Firm's Post-Quake Work Recall
Bise Mayor Tomas Osmeña has expressed outrage over reports of a BPO firm in Cebu recalling employees to work shortly after a magnitude 6.9 earthquake, putting them at risk amid aftershocks and building safety concerns. He vowed to take action if the reports are confirmed.
Osmeña stated that he would personally contact the company's clients to inform them about the employer's actions. He also mentioned that they would do more than just file a complaint with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).
The mayor's comments came after a statement on Thursday, October 2, where he received reports of the BPO firm recalling employees to continue operations despite the ongoing aftershocks and safety concerns about the building. However, there is no public information confirming that Osmeña was in contact with the specific company.
Osmeña's intervention highlights the potential dangers of putting profit over employee safety, especially in the aftermath of a natural disaster. If the reports are confirmed, his actions could pressure the company to prioritize safety and prevent similar incidents in the future.
