Bible Emphasized by Hobby Lobby President at Chapel Service
In a recent visit to Grand Canyon University (GCU), Steve Green, the president of Hobby Lobby, shared his perspective on the transformative power of the Bible and its influence on human civilization.
During his campus tour, Green, who is also the founder of the Museum of the Bible in Washington, D.C., addressed the students at GCU's Chapel and hosted the Symposium for Faith and Corporate Philanthropy. He expressed gratitude for the U.S. Constitution and God's Word, stating that the Bible has had an impact on art, literature, music, science, government, education, and all areas of life.
Green, who considers Gutenberg's printing of the Bible as the top event of the past 1,000 years, challenged GCU students to devour the Bible and engage with God's Word. He emphasized the importance of students reading the Bible, encouraging them to delve into its teachings and understand its significance in shaping moral, ethical, and cultural norms.
Hobby Lobby, the family-owned business founded by Green's father, David Green, in 1972, has been a prominent example of a company whose operations are guided by Christian principles. The company, which has about 1,040 stores in 48 states, is known for closing on Sundays and advocating for religious freedom.
In 2014, Hobby Lobby faced a significant challenge when the government required them to provide life-ending contraceptives to employees. The company's lawsuit against the government, Burwell v. Hobby Lobby Stores, resulted in a 5-4 vote in their favour. Green's family, including every family member, had a chance to express their opinion about the government's requirement.
The Museum of the Bible, founded by Green and his wife, opened in 2017 with a mission to invite all people to engage with the transformative power of the Bible. The museum has an exhibit dedicated to the "The Impact of the Bible".
Steve Green stated that the Bible has stood true despite manipulations and criticisms. He expressed that without God's help, we cannot do anything, and that God would not have Hobby Lobby be a part of taking life. These sentiments reflect the strong Christian faith that guides the Green family's business practices.
The next Chapel speaker at GCU will be Sean Myers, Pella Communities pastor, on 11 a.m. Feb. 24, at Global Credit Union Arena. The visit by Steve Green serves as a reminder of the ongoing dialogue between faith, business, and education, and the role each plays in shaping our society.
