Bavaria's Kulturbahnhof Project Faces Criticism Over €7.6M Cost Overrun

A railway project in Bavaria has sparked controversy due to soaring costs. The Federation of Taxpayers has labelled the Kulturbahnhof project in Wiesau a 'cost explosion'. The renovation of the local train station, initially estimated at around €8 million, has now reached €15.6 million.

The project, managed by Wiesau's mayor Michael (Toni) Dutz, aims to transform the station into a long-distance stop, complete with a library, catering establishment, and bakery. However, the Federation of Taxpayers has included it in its 'Black Book', highlighting cost overruns.

The sharp increase in expenses is attributed to several factors. Price hikes in the construction sector, exacerbated by the corona and Ukraine crises, have contributed significantly. Additionally, adjustments in planning and equipment have further driven up the costs.

The renovation of Wiesau's train station is now set to cost €15.6 million, more than double the initial estimate. The Federation of Taxpayers has criticised the waste of tax money, raising concerns about the project's management and oversight.
