BAGU 2025: 19 Violations Found in Germany's Nationwide Maritime Inspections
Authorities recently conducted nationwide inspections, known as the 'Bundesweite Aktionstage Gewässer- und Umweltschutz' (BAGU), from 12th to 18th May 2025. The water police of North Rhine-Westphalia led these controls, focusing on marine and environmental protection regulations.
Over 700 inspections were carried out across sea and inland shipping, with Hamburg harbor seeing 24 sea vessel checks. Nineteen violations were found, primarily involving MARPOL and Ballast Water Convention breaches. These included inadequate ballast water management plans, incorrect logbook entries, and exhausted onboard waste capacity.
One Portuguese-flagged cargo ship was discovered with a non-functional wastewater treatment plant. Repairs were promptly arranged. Another inland vessel was inspected due to suspected water pollution from paint dust and chips. Preventive discussions were held with crew members to emphasize applicable regulations and provisions.
A total of ten administrative offense proceedings were initiated, with security deposits of over 1,000 euros collected and warning fines of around 200 euros imposed. These strict measures aim to ensure maritime safety and environmental protection, with future BAGU controls expected to maintain this focus.
