Automaker Li Auto contributes $1.4 million towards Beijing flood relief efforts
Li Auto Launches Its First All-Electric SUV Amidst Severe Flooding in China
In the heart of Beijing, Li Auto, a NASDAQ-listed company based in the city, held the launch event for its first all-electric SUV, the Li i8, on a significant day in late July 2025. The premium six-seat family SUV, built on a new high-voltage battery electric vehicle (BEV) platform, promises a unique blend of off-road SUV capability, sedan-like handling, and MPV comfort[1][4].
The Li i8 boasts a proprietary high-voltage BEV platform with a 97.8-kWh ternary lithium battery pack supporting 5C supercharging. It is equipped with an in-house developed electric drive system featuring silicon carbide power chips for high efficiency, low energy loss, and rapid heat dissipation. Dual electric motors provide all-wheel drive, enabling 0-100 km/h acceleration in just 4.5 seconds[1][3].
Initially offered in three trims (Pro, Max, Ultra) priced between ~RMB 321,800 and RMB 369,800 (~€39,000 to €45,000), the Li i8 later consolidated to a single trim after a relaunch due to initial poor acceptance[1][3]. The SUV boasts a very aerodynamic design with a drag coefficient of 0.218, making it one of the most aerodynamic three-row SUVs available. Adjustable air suspension and a spacious interior allow comfort for six passengers and rear trunk space accommodating 4-5 suitcases even with all seats used. Modern amenities include smart card and smartphone access replacing traditional keys, rear-seat entertainment systems, and electronically adjustable rear air vents[5].
Despite a rough initial market reception, Li Auto relaunched the i8 with adjustments and aimed for strong deliveries. Deliveries started on August 20, 2025, across 44 cities in China. The company targeted 8,000 to 10,000 units delivered by end of September 2025, supported by over 12,000 cancellable orders[2][3].
The Li i8 faces competition from models like the Onvo L90 SUV from Nio’s sub-brand, which launched around the same time at a lower starting price but with smaller battery capacity[3]. Interestingly, the expected pricing for the Li i8 is 25% higher than the Onvo L90.
Amidst these exciting developments, Beijing and parts of northern, eastern, and northeastern China have been hit by prolonged heavy rainfall, resulting in severe flooding and related disasters. Li Auto has shown its commitment to supporting the affected areas by donating RMB 10 million to the Beijing Charity Association for flood relief efforts.
