South Sydney Rabbitohs Seek Fresh Energy Ahead of Clash with Parramatta

The South Sydney Rabbitohs, under the guidance of coach Wayne Bennett, are eager to bring a fresh energy to their upcoming match against Parramatta this Saturday at Allianz Stadium.

However, the team's aspirations for a permanent home at Allianz Stadium may face a roadblock, as the Sydney Roosters have no plans to accommodate the Rabbitohs. This has been a long-standing issue for the Rabbitohs, who have been seeking a permanent home ground.

Meanwhile, speculations about a potential change in the Rabbitohs' ownership have been circulating for some time. Dr Jerry Schwartz, a cosmetic surgeon and hotelier, expressed his interest in purchasing Russell Crowe's stake in the club, but as of the latest available information up to mid-2025, there have been no widely reported or confirmed news about Dr Schwartz making a recent bid.

Dr Schwartz, worth a reported $667 million, stated that he has a simple philosophy in business: if the price is right, he might be interested in purchasing Crowe's stake. However, it was reported that Crowe isn't prepared to sell his stake at South Sydney for less than $20 million.

In January, Crowe branded reports about the potential sale of his stake as 'bulls**t' and encouraged reporters to enjoy the summer sun instead of speculating. Dr Schwartz maintains his innocence and plans to appeal the suspension he received in 2021 due to concerns about his administration of sedation, clinical judgment, record-keeping, and Medicare billing for patients, as reported by the NSW Medical Council.

Dr Schwartz previously bid for the Rabbitohs in 2006 but was outbid by Crowe and businessman Peter Holmes à Court, who purchased 75% of the club for $3 million. Dr Schwartz's potential purchase could potentially align with his Sydney Brewery brand.

The Rabbitohs' season has been marred by injuries, and they are currently battling to avoid the wooden spoon this season, which has been largely forgettable for the team. The match against Parramatta this Saturday will be a crucial test for the team as they strive to turn their season around.

The Rabbitohs, with their ongoing search for a permanent home ground, might find it beneficial to look beyond sports and explore opportunities in business, considering Dr Jerry Schwartz's interest and financial capabilities in the club. With the Premier League drawing considerable attention in European leagues, one could speculate a slight shift in the Rabbitohs' focus from football to finance, if Schwartz becomes a part-owner. Overcoming the upcoming clash with Parramatta is indeed crucial for the team, but it remains equally vital to address the ownership issue for long-term sustainability and growth.
