At Least 27 Dead in 2022 Trying to Cross Franco-British Border

At least 27 people have lost their lives attempting to illegally cross the French-British border this year. The grim toll follows a surge in migrant crossings, with over 32,000 people successfully reaching England so far in 2022.

On Sept. 27 alone, French security forces rescued nearly 400 migrants, with 220 making it to safety and two Somali women dying after suffering cardiac arrest. The same day, the body of another migrant was recovered in Gravelines, believed to have died several days earlier. Rescue operations took place at 24 departure points in northern France over the weekend.

The following day, at least 176 migrants were rescued, including several injured and a teenager who died after being found unconscious on a beach. This comes as part of a recent scheme allowing the UK to return migrants deemed ineligible for asylum, with the UK accepting an equal number of migrants from France likely to have their claims granted.

With over 895 people arriving in England on Sept. 27 alone, the issue of migrant crossings remains a pressing concern. The recent agreement between France and the UK aims to address this, with the UK accepting migrants from France while returning those deemed ineligible for asylum. However, the tragic loss of life underscores the urgent need for a comprehensive solution.
