Approximately 450,000 General Motors vehicles are being withdrawn from service due to a problem with the brake warning system.
In a recent development, General Motors Co. has announced a recall of 449,671 vehicles across various models due to a software fault in the electronic brake control module. The recalled vehicles were produced between August 2022 and July 24, 2024.
The issue came to light on April 18 when a GM engineer discovered that the brake warning light might fail to illuminate if there is a loss of brake fluid. This could potentially leave drivers unaware of low brake fluid levels, which can reduce braking performance and increase the risk of a crash.
The software fault was further investigated, and it was found that there was a mismatch between the electronic brake control module software and calibrations. This discrepancy could cause the brake warning light on the dashboard to fail to illuminate under certain conditions.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has stated that 100% of these vehicles have the software defect. The affected vehicles include certain 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 pickups, as well as the 2023-2024 models of Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, GMC Yukon and Yukon XL SUVs, and Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV.
GM opened a product investigation on April 30 and made the decision to conduct a noncompliance recall for vehicles produced before July 24 on Sept. 5. Dealers were notified of the recall on Sept. 12.
The problem will be remedied via an over-the-air software update for the electronic brake control module. Alternatively, customers can visit a dealer to have the software updated. It is important to note that GM is not aware of any crashes or injuries associated with this issue.
Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on Oct. 28. This recall underscores the importance of timely maintenance and regular vehicle checks to ensure safety on the road.
