Approval of tramway line 24's route in northern Munich: an outline of the upcoming journey

The city of Munich is set to enhance its public transportation network with the planned extension of Tram Line 24, dubbed the Munich North Tram. This project aims to improve accessibility and connectivity in the northern districts of the city, linking underserved neighbourhoods to key transit hubs and the city centre.

The proposed route for Line 24 will lead west from Werner-Egk-Bogen along Heidemannstraße, crossing Ingolstädter Straße and the Grünanlage Rathenaupark. The existing Tram Line 23 will be extended from Schwabing Nord, with both sections expected to be operational by the end of 2029.

The extension of Line 24 is one of the most significant rail infrastructure projects for the SWM and MVG, alongside the Tram West Tangent. The project's goals include improving transit accessibility, reducing car traffic and emissions, enhancing public transit capacity, and better integrating with existing metro and bus lines.

Costs for similar tram extension projects in major German cities typically range from tens to over a hundred million euros. However, the exact costs for Munich's Line 24 have not been disclosed publicly yet. It is worth noting that a subsidy from the federal government and the Free State of up to 90% of the eligible costs, amounting to around 220 million euros, is possible.

In addition to the construction of the new tram line, improvements will be made to the adjacent street area, with a focus on upgrading facilities for pedestrians and cyclists. For example, separate bike lanes with a width of three meters will be created along Ingolstädter Straße, on both sides of the intersection with Heidemannstraße and Eulerstraße.

The new Line 24 will run on the new cross-connection between Kieferngarten and Am Hart, with a turnaround loop for the tram being created at the U-Bahn station Am Hart. This will enable new connections, such as between Parkstadt Schwabing, Milbertshofen, and Fröttmaning. Passengers will also have the opportunity to conveniently transfer to bus and U-Bahn services at the two new end points.

Preparatory investigations are currently underway for section 1, the extension of tram 23 from Schwabing Nord to Kieferngarten. Construction is scheduled to begin in the fall, but it depends on the coordination with the bridge construction project over the DB-Nordring, which must be approved by Deutsche Bahn.

For the most accurate and up-to-date information on the Munich North Tram Line 24, including its current status, proposed route, projected benefits, and costs, we recommend consulting the latest official project documents from the Munich municipal transport authority (MVG) or the City of Munich’s urban planning department.

The extension of Tram Line 24 is projected to integrate with existing metro and bus lines, potentially improving accessibility in the financing sector by reducing car traffic and emissions. The planned improvements along Ingolstädter Straße, including the construction of three-meter-wide bike lanes, could stimulate growth in the transportation sector by promoting cycling and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure.
