Anticipated Impact of Italian National Rail Strike on Tuesday: Insights and Predictions

Your train ride in Italy could face unwanted interruptions this coming May 6th, 2025, thanks to an eight-hour-long protest by the staff at Ferrovie dello Stato, the state-owned rail operator. Here's a heads up for your upcoming journey.

Rail passengers in Italy brace for delays and cancellations as employees, including those from Trenitalia, Trenord, and Trenitalia Tper, join forces in a daylong strike. Let's help you navigate through the disruption.

The Great Rail Walkout

The August call to action was issued by six of Italy's major trade unions—Filt Cgil, Fit Cisl, and Uiltrasporti—after the latest round of talks over the renewal of the collective labor agreements in the rail sector fell short. Filt Cgil went on record last week, stating, "No agreement that aligns with trade unions' demands has been found yet."

The planned strike is touted as "necessary" to "defend the dignity of work, [workers'] safety, and the future of the Italian railway sector." Collective labor agreements in the rail sector expired in December 2023, according to the union statement.

The Players on the Battlefield

Trenitalia

Italy's national operator issued a warning that their services "may experience cancellations or changes" due to the strike. Despite the disruptions, Trenitalia will provide several essential long-distance services during the walkout. You can find the full list here.

Trenitalia's regional train network will operate essential services over the following windows: from 6am to 9am and from 6pm to 9pm. Find the details for each Italian region.

Trenord

Lombardy's regional operator, Trenord, may see repercussions on suburban, regional, airport, and long-distance journeys. Services that are scheduled to run between 6am and 9am, and from 6pm to 9pm, will not be affected by the strike.

Should airport link services be cancelled due to the strike, replacement buses will run between Milan Cadorna (Via Paleocapa 1) and Malpensa Airport, and between Stabio and Malpensa Airport. For the latest updates, see Trenord's website or mobile app, or call their support centre at 02 72 49 49 49.

Trenitalia Tper

The operator of regional trains in the Emilia-Romagna region may experience schedule changes or cancellations due to the strike. The Emilia-Romagna operator (a Trenitalia-TPER joint venture) will guarantee a minimum level of service over the following time slots on Tuesday: from 6am to 9am and from 6pm to 9pm.

Italo

The private long-distance operator Italo is expected to remain unaffected by the protest, according to the latest reports.

When Strikes Go Wrong

Rail strikes in Italy are frequent but not all result in major chaos for passengers. The severity of disruptions in any transport walkout generally depends on the number of workers participating. Nationwide protests backed by one or more major trade unions typically represent a larger workforce and may cause significant delays or cancellations.

When Your Train is Nixed

If a pre-booked rail service is cancelled due to strike action in Italy, passengers are normally allowed to travel on equivalent services or are entitled to a refund. For more information on requesting a refund from Italy's two major train operators Trenitalia and Italo, read our separate article.
