Anglican Church of Canada's 15th top church leader position filled by an Ottawa bishop

After a historic election, the Anglican Church of Canada has a new spiritual leader. The Rt. Rev. Shane Parker was elected as the 15th primate on June 26, 2025, during the General Synod's 44th session at St. Paul's Cathedral in London, Ontario.

Parker, who has been serving as the bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Ottawa since 2020, will be installed as the new primate during a worship service at St. Paul's Cathedral in London on June 29, 2025, three days after his election.

Prior to his current position, Parker served as dean of the Diocese of Ottawa and rector of Christ Church Cathedral in Ottawa for two decades. He also has a master's degree in sociology from Carleton University and holds an honorary doctorate from Saint Paul University, where he has served as a part-time professor of pastoral ministry.

As the primate, Parker will be the chief executive officer of the church's national staff team and a member of every national committee, council, and board in the Anglican Church of Canada. He will represent the Anglican Church nationally and internationally.

Following the retirement of Primate Linda Nicholls on Sept. 15, 2024, Archbishop Anne Germond had been the acting primate. Parker's predecessor as Primate of the Anglican Church of Canada was Linda Nicholls.

Parker chairs the Anglican Studies Advisory Committee at Saint Paul University and is involved in various committees and councils within the Anglican Church of Canada. His installation service will be a significant event for the Anglican Church of Canada, marking a new era under his leadership.

The Anglican Church of Canada's current spiritual leader is the primate, and with Parker's election, the church looks forward to the guidance and leadership he will provide in the coming years.
