New and Shuffled Leadership at McCann Worldgroup and IPG Mediabrands Shakes Up Interpublic Group

Interpublic Group (IPG) has shaken things up with a slew of senior leadership changes at two of its top agencies, McCann Worldgroup and IPG Mediabrands. All while reporting a boost in its second quarter revenue.

At McCann Worldgroup, Daryl Lee steps up to the plate as global CEO, previously holding the global CEO position for IPG Mediabrands. Eileen Kiernan takes over as Global CEO of IPG Mediabrands, replacing Lee in that role. Bill Kolb? He's moving on up to chairman at McCann, having served as CEO for McCann Worldgroup.

Effective immediately, these changes will roll out. But fear not, Europeans, these execs won't be jumping ship just yet. Over the next month, they'll work hand-in-hand with their current teams and clients, ensuring seamless transitions for everyone. By September, they'll officially be settled into their new roles.

Rewinding the Tape, Taking the Company Forward

So why the sudden shift in power positions? Well, let's rewind a bit. Dimitri Maex, formerly Global CEO of Initiative and Global President of Mediabrands, is heading for the exit. He'll be joining Accenture Song later this year. With Maex on his way out, Stacy DeRiso was promoted as Global Brand President of Initiative. This switch-up is all about maintaining a strong momentum, specifically upholding the "Fame & Flow" framework DeRiso's worked tirelessly to develop. Since DeRiso's well-versed in the core of Initiative and clients, she's poised to carry on the torch after Maex's departure.

In the Greater China region, IPG Mediabrands gave the green light to Promote Penny Chow to Chief Operating Officer of IPG Mediabrands Greater China, and Jay Lee to Executive Creative Director of MBCS Greater China. These pivots aim to boost collaboration, synergy, and streamline internal operations in one of IPG Mediabrands’ most vibrant regions. With Chow’s knack for transforming IPG Mediabrands Taiwan and cementing strong client partnerships, these leadership advancements point to a future full of progress and innovation for IPG.

Clients and Operations, Two Sides of the Same Coin

  • Preserving the Legacy: With DeRiso on board, IPG can rely on ongoing strategic initiatives, like "Fame & Flow," to ensure a steady flow of innovation and impactful media and brand-building strategies for clients globally. Her history with the agency means less disruption for clients and a smoother ride for the internal culture, too.
  • Home Grown Leaders, Global Reach: The changes in Greater China aim to strengthen local leadership, specifically by enhancing operational efficiency and creative excellence in this critical growth area. IPG intends to respond to market challenges and client needs with agility and precision through these leadership enhancements, delivering better service and results to clients.
  • Embracing the Future: The shifts underscore IPG's recognition of the shifting landscape, emphasizing an increased integration of technology, data analytics, and creative services. Maex's departure to Accenture Song encapsulates this shift, while IPG Mediabrands' internal promotions focus on fostering steady growth and innovation within the current leadership framework.

In a nutshell, these changes represent a strategic overhaul at McCann Worldgroup and IPG Mediabrands, designed to preserve proven frameworks, bolster local leadership, and deepen client engagement. The aim is to benefit both company operations and client outcomes by leveraging continuity and targeted improvements within the global IPG network.

  1. As Daryl Lee transitions into the Global CEO position at McCann Worldgroup and Eileen Kiernan takes over as Global CEO of IPG Mediabrands, both individuals will need to consider their new roles in terms of company financing and business operations, ensuring a seamless transition for existing clients.
  2. The shift in power positions within IPG Mediabrands, such as the promotion of Penny Chow as COO of IPG Mediabrands Greater China and Jay Lee as Executive Creative Director of MBCS Greater China, aims to further strengthen the agency's leadership in finance, careers, and business growth in one of its most vibrant regions.
