ADECCO Takes Lead Role in Sustainability Indices of Dow Jones World and Europe

The Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI), a renowned global benchmark, tracks the financial performance of leading sustainability-driven companies worldwide. Established in 1999, the DJSI is the first index to focus on sustainability-driven companies, setting a high standard for corporate responsibility and sustainable practices.

Each year, over 3,000 publicly traded companies are invited to report on their sustainability practices. This comprehensive analysis, conducted by S&P Global, evaluates companies based on their long-term economic, environmental, and social performance. To be included and outperform peers, companies must excel across these core dimensions.

The assessment, known as the Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA), identifies top sustainability leaders among the largest companies globally or regionally, often representing the top 10% to 20% within their peer groups. Key factors considered in the DJSI include environmental criteria, such as management of natural resources and carbon emissions, social criteria, like labor practices and human rights, and economic criteria, such as corporate governance and risk management.

Companies demonstrating strong governance, transparent sustainability reporting, and commitment to improving in these areas are ranked higher and more likely to be included and to outperform their peers. Sustainability performance is often benchmarked within sectors to ensure a fair comparison with industry peers. The DJSI favours companies with long-term strategies that integrate sustainability into their core business models, ensuring resilience and responsible growth.

While the analysis did not specify which largest companies worldwide were part of the benchmark, it did highlight that among the companies invited, 800 are from emerging markets. Moreover, companies included in the DJSI consistently outperform their peers in numerous sustainability metrics.

It is important to note that the DJSI follows a best-in-class approach, including companies across all industries. The analysis focuses on industry-specific risks and opportunities, evaluating factors such as innovation, supply chain management, climate strategy, and stakeholder engagement. The DJSI does not limit itself to a specific industry or sector, making it a truly global benchmark for sustainable companies.

However, it is essential to clarify that the DJSI was not created by RobecoSAM, but it may be used in their analysis. The analysis did not mention any awards or recognitions for the companies, nor did it provide specific details about the companies' performance in the benchmark. Nevertheless, the DJSI remains an important tool for investors seeking to support companies that prioritise long-term sustainability and responsible growth.
