A59 Closure Disappoints Mayor Schneider as Traffic Concerns Mount
The upcoming closure of the A59 in the direction of Leverkusen has sparked disappointment from Mayor Frank Schneider due to initial coordination issues. The project, set to commence on October 15, 2025, between Düsseldorf-South and Richrath interchange, is expected to significantly impact the region over the next two years.
The Traffic Department has expressed concerns about the sequencing of preparations. While the Autobahn GmbH plans to install signs before the holidays, traffic lights will not be activated until October 20, 2025. This delay has raised eyebrows, as two companies have been commissioned to install and operate nine construction site traffic light systems in preparation for the diversion concept.
The closure will initially stretch from Düsseldorf-South to Richrath interchange. However, from October 20, 2025, it will extend to the Monheim/Langenfeld interchange. The Autobahn GmbH has not disclosed the names of the two companies involved in setting up and operating the necessary traffic light systems.
The A59 closure, starting October 15, 2025, is expected to cause significant regional disruption. While preparations are underway, the sequencing of traffic management measures has drawn criticism. Motorists are advised to plan alternative routes and be prepared for potential delays.
