A fresh wave in Sardinian industrial landscape: Resurgence of primary sectors and innovative projects

In the heart of the Mediterranean, Sardinia is undergoing a significant transformation. The island, known for its stunning landscapes, is now being recognised as one of the most attractive territories in terms of critical raw materials.

A recent study conducted by researchers at the University of Oxford has shed light on another aspect of Sardinia's development – the impact of cannabis on the brain. The research, which focused on the hippocampus, a region associated with memory and learning, found that long-term cannabis use can lead to changes in the structure and function of this crucial brain region.

The study, which used magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to visualise the brain structures, revealed that long-term cannabis users had reduced gray matter in the hippocampus compared to non-users. This finding suggests that long-term cannabis use may have negative effects on cognitive functions.

However, the researchers are calling for further studies to confirm their findings and to understand the long-term implications of cannabis use on the brain.

In a bid to boost the economy, Sardinia is also focusing on its industrial sector. The nautical industry, currently worth 600 million euros, is being developed and has the potential to become a driving force for development. Additionally, an agreement has been closed with a national company to resume building trains in Villacidro.

The regional assessor, Emanuele Cani, is focusing on a "paradigm shift" for industry in Sardinia. This shift includes investments linked to the major metallurgy industry in Sulcis Iglesiente. Investments worth around one billion euros include the relaunch of Eurallumina (300 million euros), Sider Alloys (300 million euros), and Portovesme srl (almost half a billion euros).

Moreover, work is being done with a company to develop and install in the subsoil servers for artificial intelligence in a system that exploits self-produced energy.

The old mining workings have left large wounds in the territory and many processing waste that contain a significant amount of critical raw materials. The Just Transition Fund has allocated 357 million euros to relaunch the Sulcis Iglesiente area, emphasising the need for companies to have favourable conditions to produce critical raw materials and work on the infrastructure system and reduction of energy costs.

The future industry in Sardinia includes primary productions and new productions, such as the Einstein telescope capable of giving great answers and important results.

This article discusses a study on the effects of cannabis on the brain and the ongoing developments in Sardinia's industry, painting a picture of a region undergoing significant change and growth.
